The "Shep" Mound
| Location | The "Shep" Mound is named after Bruce Sheperd and is located at the end of Perimeter Road near the control Tower. Acess is via Ross Smith Avenue and there is also an exit / entry road from the northern lanes of General Holmes Drive. This is one of the most popular spotting locations at the airport and you will find many of the regular spotters and photographers there. |
| View | At this location there is a broad view of the airport north of the control tower, covering Runway 16R/34L and Runway 25/07, the taxiways, the International Terminal and the T2 Domestic Terminal. More recently the area looks more like a construction zone, with the section near the airport perimeter fenced off even further and earth moving equipment parked right in fornt of the best viewing points (see photograph below). |
| Equipment | Nothing is required at this location. |
| Photography | Best in the morning. Departures from Runway 16R will rotate in front of The Mound depending on loading, and Arrivals on Runway 34L are just finishing their reverse thrust and braking for the Alpha 2 Rapid (International) or Bravo 9 Rapid or Bravo 8 (Domestic). Aircraft taxiing on Charlie or Bravo and very close and there are good photo opportunities. At the end of 2005 light towers were installed at regular intervals along the perimeter fence and they make photography a little more difficult. |

pretty average these days, first the perimiter light towers were
installed and then the area in front was fenced off, now construction equipment

The view towards the International Terminal across Runway 16R/34L and Runway 07/25 with taxiway Charlie in the foreground.

The view of the International Terminal stand off apron which has four heavy jet stands, commonly used by United,
Ethiad, Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines.

The view directly across Runway 16R/34L west towards the old control tower. Two of the security light towers can be seen
in the foreground and they make shots of larger aircraft more difficult.

The view looking southwest across the General Holmes Drive road tunnel. The red and white strips separate taxiways Charlie,
Bravo and Runway 16R / 34L.

The "Shep" Mound area has plenty of parking, however the grass area has deteriorated significantly in recent months.
